Newcastle Hospitals Can
Since the launch of Newcastle Can, the Newcastle Hospital teams have been at the forefront of the campaign, setting themselves a challenge of collectively losing 1,000lbs which they are well on the way to achieving!
Including it within their workplace wellness and alongside the North East Better Health At Work Award, the Newcastle Hospital teams have pledged to lose 1,000lbs. They began their journey by setting up the ‘Newcastle Hospitals Can’ team on the website and encouraging as many people as possible to join. Since then a number of other teams have been created on the website to allow teams based in different locations across the city do their own initiatives and drive some friendly competition. There are now nearly 20 Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (NUTH) teams up and running!
Each team is different, but the initiatives that they’re doing include:
- Monthly emails to all staff who have signed up celebrating the Top 3 teams, and Top 5 individuals
- Weekly emails to staff encouraging them to log weight loss
- Weekly healthy recipes on a Friday
- Weekly weigh ins
- Walk to work groups
- Staff running groups
- Incentives for both the greatest weight loss and average weight loss within teams
- Monthly internal review and update on how well the trust team is doing
“I am very impressed with how Newcastle Hospital staff have stepped up to the Newcastle Can challenge. Seeing staff groups supporting each other to lose weight and improve their own health is inspirational. Some groups have set up a weekly weigh in and others have started walking regularly . Our staff running groups have also increased in size as staff pull on their running shoes to get active and shed the pounds. I am confident that we will keep this up and hit our 1,000lb weight loss target for the year.” - Charlotte Dodson, - Health Improvement Practitioner (Advanced) Better Health at Work, The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
