Malcolm Can, You Can!
"In my younger years, I was always really active, especially playing loads of footie. But when I got into my forties, that changed - I had to retire from playing football and became way more less active.
Then, 5 years ago, I had a total reality check when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and advised by my doctor that I needed to start taking medicine and change my lifestyle.
So, that's exactly what I did. My wife and I have made a series of lifestyles changes over the past 5 years and we have really felt the benefits.
We've cut back the drinking and don't have alcohol during the week now, we've cut way back on the amount of sugar we're eating, we've changed our diet - cutting back on simple carbohydrates to help maintain my blood sugar levels. So that's meant cutting back on rice, potatoes, bread and pasta and not having them as often or making simple switches like having sweet potatoes and other vegatables as a compromise from the carbohydrates.
We're also way more active again now. We'll get out during the week and at weekends, going our for walks together, walking rather than driving to get the shopping, walking to various locations and getting the bus back to keep active.
They're all simple changes but we've massively felt the benefits. I've lost over 3 stone, and my diabetes is under much better control.
That's why I've joined Newcastle Can and why I'm trying to encourage my team at Stagecoach Slatyford to get involved too. Being a driver is a really sedentary job and it's not always easy to eat right and get active, but hopefully the others will see that small changes do make a big difference and that if I can do it, they can too!"
