Cutting back on sugary drinks 

As a nation, we're consuming way too much sugar and much of it is coming from sugary drinks which have absolutely no nutritional value. That's why they're often referred to as empty calories.

It's recommended that adults don't consume any more than 7 teaspoons of sugar each day. However, some sugary drinks can contain up to 13 teaspoons of sugar in one serving! That's a whopping 6 teaspoons over the recommended amount.

Challenge: Cut back or even ditch the sugary drinks for a week!

If you currently have one can of pop a day, then by stopping for a week you'll be saving yourself from 91 teaspoons of sugar and around 970 calories. That one can a day could lead to over a stone (six kilos) in weight gain per year!

Switch out your sugary drinks for water (did you know that Newcastle has some of the best water in the UK, which actually protects and helps to strengthen your teeth, the opposite of sugar rotting them!) tea and coffee. Get more facts on what's in our drinks here.
