Challenge: Can you lose a lb in a week?

Can you lose a pound in a week? It might seem daunting, but actually - as many of our community will tell you - making a few small changes really does lead to big results.

Most of us are over consuming, with the average adult eating 200-300 more calories than we need every day. This might not sound much, but over time it will cause significant weight gain. And some of us are eating much more than that!

So we're challenging you to take a look at what you're eating, see if you can make a few changes and see how you feel at the end of the week. Take away one glass of wine a night, that daily chocolate bar, an extra spoonful of pasta, a daily bag of crisps, a can of a sugary drink and you'll really start to see the results.

Drink plenty of water People sometimes confuse thirst with hunger. You can end up consuming extra calories when a glass of water is really what you need. Get the facts on drinks here.

Breakfast Despite what you may think - skipping breakfast won't help you lose weight. Instead you’re likely to end up snacking more throughout the day because you feel hungry.

Up your fruit and veg Fruit and veg are low in calories and fat, and high in fibre – three essential ingredients for successful weight loss. They also contain plenty of vitamins and minerals. Switch some fruit for your daily snacks.

Use a smaller plate Portion sizes make a big difference. Try using a smaller plate (and not going back to fill it with seconds and thirds!).

Dump the junk To avoid temptation, try to not stock junk food – such as chocolate, biscuits, crisps and sugary drinks – at home and avoid them whenever you can when you’re out – remember that one can of pop a day could lead to over a stone of weight gain per year! Cut back on the booze A pint of lager can have the same amount of calories as a McDonalds burger, a cider the same amount of calories as a large slice of pizza and a glass of white wine the same a chocolate bar. Cut back on the booze and you’ll start to see changes really quickly. More on booze here.
